The mobile Internet is about to go mass market. During the next few years, millions of users will
acquire their first smart phone, a device that makes it easy and enjoyable to use the mobile Internet.
The range of services that people use on their phones will become increasingly diverse — changing
phones from special-purpose devices into general-purpose devices.
As PCs have shown, the most powerful point of control over the user experience, on a general-purpose
device, is the operating system — the platform upon which applications are built. Unlike PCs, however,
there is no dominant smart phone platform. On the contrary, the number of contenders continues to increase,
with the emergence of platforms such as iPhone, Android, LiMo, WebOS, Maemo and Bada. The battle among
platform providers to win loyalty from device vendors, application developers and mobile operators is
intensifying, and application storefronts have emerged as a key weapon.
In this complementary Webcast, IDC analysts Jonathan Arber and John Delaney will help you:
- Discover the moves that leading players are making in their endeavours to control the mobile
Internet user experience
- Understand the role that smart phone platforms and application storefronts play in those
players' strategies
- Gain more insight into the strengths, shortcomings and prospects of some of the major contenders
Session Speakers:
- John Delaney, Research Director, European Consumer Mobile, IDC EMEA
- Jonathan Arber, Senior Research Analyst, European Consumer Wireless and Mobile Communications, IDC EMEA
